What Is Yin Yoga, and Who Is It For?

Yin yoga is a slow and quiet style of yoga designed to hold postures for longer periods, often for three to five minutes at a time, using bolsters, blocks, and blankets so the body can be supported and settle into each posture.
Unlike more active styles of yoga that work the muscles, Yin works its way into the fascia and connective tissue surrounding the joints. The posture itself, held stillness, and gravity all begin to work slowly on this deeper tissue, which is why Yin is so effective for areas that stay tight from sitting all day: the hips and lower back respond to sustained, gentle pressure in a way a quick stretch can not address. A long-held posture also supports the nervous system. Sustained stillness activates the parasympathetic nervous system response and allows yoga practitioners to leave a class in a noticeably calmer state.
So who is Yin for? Almost everyone, though it is worth saying honestly: it is not always the easiest practice. You do not need to be flexible, and you do not need previous experience. Just follow the teacher's instructions. What Yin requires is presence, and the willingness to stay in a posture even when sensation builds rather than move away from it. The practitioner can try to relax with the breath and pay attention to the mind and what arises. Unless there is sharp pain or unbearable discomfort, one should remain as still as possible. Many beginners actually find this more approachable than a fast-paced yoga class, since there is time to properly learn and experience each posture.
At Om Yoga Studios in Amsterdam West, we teach Yin alongside our other classes, usually in the evening, when the day is ready to slow down with you. All levels are welcome.
