New to a yoga studio? What your first class in Amsterdam West is actually like

Walking into a yoga studio for the first time can feel strangely intimidating. You are not sure what to wear, where to go, or whether everyone else will already know what they are doing. It is worth saying clearly: none of that needs to hold you back.
Come in comfortable clothes you can move in — nothing special required. We have mats and props at the studio, so you can arrive empty-handed the first time. Try to get there five or ten minutes early so you can find the room, leave your shoes and bag, and settle before things begin.
Our studio is on the third floor at Willem de Zwijgerlaan 350, above Hotel G in Bos en Lommer. When you arrive, tell the teacher it is your first class. That one sentence lets them keep an eye out for you and offer easier options when they are useful.
A class usually starts slowly — some settling and breathing before any movement. From there the teacher guides you through postures step by step, always with a simpler version on offer. You are never expected to keep up or to look like anyone else in the room. Rest whenever you need to; stepping back for a breath is part of the practice, not a failure.
You do not need to be flexible, calm or experienced to belong here. Beginners practise alongside people who have been at it for years, and most of what matters is simply showing up and paying attention to your own body.
If you would like to try, your first class at Om Yoga Studios is free — come as you are. Book online at omyogastudios.nl, and follow @omyogastudios if you would like a look at studio life before you visit.
